    Hi Mam,
What is the minimum and maximum distance between the columns as per IS standard for the residential building with G+2 floor

    1. Hi Log.
Hope you are a Civil Engineer and understand the basics.

As of today, the latest building code for residential buildings in India is the “National Building Code of India 2016” (NBC 2016), which is published by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and is referred to as “SP 7: 2016”.

As per IS 456:2000 (Indian Standard Code for Plain and Reinforced Concrete), the spacing between columns in a residential building (G+2) depends on several factors such as structural load, span length, and functional requirements. However, general guidelines are:

      Minimum Distance Between Columns:
2.5 meters (8 feet) – This is the minimum practical spacing to allow proper room sizes and avoid congestion in reinforcement.
Columns placed too close can lead to increased construction costs and space inefficiency.
      Maximum Distance Between Columns:
7.5 meters (25 feet) – For normal residential buildings with G+2 floors, the maximum spacing is typically kept around 7.5m to prevent excessive beam sizes and deflection.
In some cases, with advanced structural design and high-strength materials, this can be increased to 8–9 meters, but it requires deeper beams or additional reinforcements.
